Two numbers and a list.
We examined 68 things on this computer. 54 are already right. 14 need fixing — and the report names every one of them.
Inside that second number is the part people sit with. Most of it is a job — something patches it. But some programs the maker has stopped updating altogether. Nothing patches end-of-life software. There is no setting to change and no update to install, so the report marks those separately and says what to replace them with.
Every finding is dated and named: what it is, what version you have, and how long it has been since anyone fixed it. Plain English, worst door first.
“But our IT company keeps us 95% patched.”
That is good work, and the number is probably accurate. Here is the question nobody thinks to ask:
95% of what?
Patch compliance measures the programs the tool was told to watch. The ones that bite are the programs nothing is watching — because they never announce that they need updating. They just sit there quietly with the door open.
This is not a knock on your IT person. It is how the tools were built, and every tool in the category was built the same way. You can be 95% compliant and still have the one open door.
The scan counts what the other tools are not counting. That is all it does — and it is the only way to find out that the number was 95% of a smaller list than you thought.
